DePuy Orthopaedics Recalls Two

Types of Hip Replacements

If you received a DePuy hip replacement between July 2003 and August 2010, the hip you received may have been subject to a recall. On August 26, 2010, Johnson and Johnson recalled two different types of hip replacements manufactured by DePuy Orthopaedics, a subsidiary of the company. The recalled hips include the ASR™ XL Acetabular Hip System, a traditional type of DePuy hip replacement, and the DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System, a partial hip replacement. These two types of hips have a 12 to 13 percent failure rate, much higher than the industry average. Problems occur when parts of the DePuy hip replacement loosen, causing broken bones, metal in the bloodstream and pseudotumors.

How to Determine if you are Affected

by the Recall

DePuy makes several different types of hip implants, and not all of them fall under the recall. If you are unsure what type of DePuy hip replacement you received, contact your doctor or hospital to find out. In the event that you received a recalled DePuy hip replacement, your doctor can test your hip to ensure that it is functioning correctly and determine whether you will need additional surgery. The company has promised to cover the cost of testing and treatment, so if you have a defective DePuy hip replacement, you should be entitled to receive a DePuy hip settlement.

Symptoms of a Failed DePuy Hip

Replacement System

Even if your doctor doesn’t find any problems with your DePuy hip replacement, it is important to be on the lookout for signs of a failure. These symptoms can include pain, difficulty walking and swelling that extends beyond the period immediately after surgery or returns after your surgery has healed. If you experience any of these symptoms, your DePuy hip replacement may have detached from the bone or fallen out of alignment, or you may have experienced a fracture near the site of your implant. All of these problems require immediate attention.
